The Bechet High School teacher, who is accused of sexual misconduct with a minor after allegedly sending nude photos to a 14-year-old girl, has been denied bail and remains in custody pending his next court appearance on 22 May. This follows his first court appearance on Monday this week.
The teacher was charged last week after it emerged that he was allegedly exchanging sexually explicit messages and images with the learner. Commenting on this, KZN Education Department communications officer, Muzi Mahlambi, said the incident was brought to light to the department last Thursday, after the girl’s parents saw the messages.
It has since been alleged that the learner and educator were involved in a relationship for several months. The following morning, the Education Department head, Vusumuzi Nzama, visited the school to intervene. Speaking at an assembly on Friday, Nzama encouraged learners who were experiencing any inappropriate behaviour from educators, to speak out and report it to their parents, teachers and the department.
Colonel Thembeka Mbhele of SAPS explained that it was the father of the girl who blew the whistle on the incident after he noticed she was acting unusual. “He took her phone, scrolled through her messages and discovered that the educator had sent her naked photos of himself as well as messages that confirmed an intimate relationship. Police arrested the educator for sending pornography to a child and sexually grooming a minor,” he said.
