Lord Shiva statue unveiling ceremony a success

On Sunday, 19 February 2012 the Umgeni Road Temple in Durban hosted the unveiling ceremony of the largest statue of Lord Shiva in Africa. The statue was graciously commissioned by Theasen Pillay a local attorney. The function was attended by thousands of devotees, who after the religious ceremony were treated to a rich cultural program, that was broadcast live on radio, as well as a fireworks display and supper.

Shameen Thakur Rajbansi who was present at the event was delighted that Pillay, a member of the youth, commissioned the deity of Lord Shiva, based on his faith and hope inspired by the Lord. He wished to leave the Murthi as an inspiration for future generations. Rajbansi spoke on the glories of Lord Shiva by explaining that Indian art, science and culture glorify the divine and glimpses based on the legend that the Gods bored with heavenly inactivity sent Indra to Brahma to write a play which if they saw and heard would make them understand the real nature of joy.

Lord Shiva destroys evil from the mind while mother Parvati builds peace and harmony with a cleansed mind. For Mahashivaratri, concentration on the Lord or Nataraja (the Lord of dance) and his glories, allows the mind to meditate and for devotees to develop mind control for inner wellness and prosperity.
