HIV-infected tomato sauce a hoax

A widely circulated e-mail in which it was claimed that tomato sauce could have been deliberately contaminated with the blood of an HIV positive person, is a hoax.

A well-known food chain had allegedly sent the e-mail to schools warning them of the sauce.

The e-mail was brought to the attention of the South African Police Service [SAPS] and a thorough enquiry revealed it to be a hoax.

Unfortunately, it has becoming an urban legend. Similar hoaxes have been discovered on websites in other countries.

The e-mail urges people not to use tomato sauce – or any other sauce – not sealed in a sachet, as a man was caught putting HIV-positive blood into tomato sauce at a restaurant. No such incident is known to the SAPS.

The South African Police Service, yet again, urges people
to ignore this and similar e-mails and SMSes probably created by a person or persons intent on causing alarm or panic.
