Beware of pickpockets Bayview police are urging business owners to tighten security measures ahead of the height of festive season trade. Traditionally, more armed robberies and petty thefts take place over this period, when more cash is flowing.
During the course of last week, there were five attacks on shops in a local shopping mall in Chatsworth. Pickpockets and shoplifters were caught and fined.
Police spokesperson for Bayview SAPS, inspector Collin Chetty, stated that criminals also often strike when shopping malls are busy and they have easy access to handbags.
Criminals also target small businesses when they know they will be paying staff wages or end-of-year bonuses.
“These businesses
pay their workers directly and they often become targets of criminals.
We urge businesses to arrange to have their workers wages paid into their bank accounts.
“It is not advisable to carry large sums of money in public and members of the community need to exercise precautionary measures when doing their festive shopping,” said Insp. Chetty.
