Date rape drug surfaces again Police in Chatsworth are aiming to stamp out drugs from the community this festive season with undercover operations at local nightclubs and pubs in the area.
Police are also warning teenagers to be wary of the date rape drug Rohypnol which has surfaced again. In the past few weeks, police have charged three owners for illegal possession of drugs such as Rohypnol, sugars and rock (crack cocaine).
Superintendent Eddie Von Bargen from the Metro Police South Region command said concern about Rohypnol was increasing and it was found in many nightclubs. "People will be going to parties and clubs this festive season and we are urging them to be careful. They should not leave their drinks unattended and should try to stay with groups of friends instead of socialising with complete strangers.”
In order to eradicate it from clubs, Von Bargen said the Metro Police and SAPS would conduct undercover operations. Provincial Spokesperson for SAPS, Superintendent Vincent Mdunge, said anyone found in possession of Rohypnol would face stiff charges.
"Many people have been raped after their drinks were spiked. Club owners need to take the initiative to make sure that these drugs are not allowed into clubs by conducting searches. People caught with these drugs face long jail terms of up to 25 years."
Mdunge urged victims of date rape to come forward and assist police. "Although we urge members of the public to be extra cautious when they visit clubs, the sad reality is that many have fallen victim to date rape drugs. By coming forward for testing, we can establish what sort of drugs have been used."
“Club-goers need to be wary of the effects of these drugs. The effects include feelings of drowsiness, dizziness and nausea. The victim can also have feelings of relaxation, tranquillity, sensuality and loss of inhibitions, often appearing drunk and helpless, eventually losing consciousness," added Mdunge.
Anyone who may have information on drug dealers or hidden drugs can contact Superintendent Eddie Von Bargen or Captain Rajen Moodley on 031 402 0680.
