Drug kingpin arrested

Police of Chatsworth are making huge strides in the fight against Sugars, with officers arresting drug kingpin Sheik Ahmed Cassim on Friday, 12th December.

Cassim was arrested with 150 loops of Sugars following a three-day sting operation. Sugars is a form of highly addictive heroin, the heated fumes of which are smoked through a hollow tube.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Jay Naicker said, “Cassim appeared in court on Wednesday, and was charged with three counts of dealing in heroin. "He had previous charges against him, with two cases of possession of heroin pending against him. An undisclosed sum of money was also confiscated, " Supt. Naicker said.

Senior Supt. Rajen Aiyer, unit commander of the Durban Organised Crime Unit, stated that drugs would not be tolerated in the community. Police have sent a clear message to those who dare perpetrate crime. We will continue to work within the legal framework and uphold the values of the constitution to ensure that Durban is safe.
“Should you wish to make a difference and support the fight against drugs in Chatsworth, you can supply information, anonymously, to Crime Stop at 086 001 0111,” said Aiyer.

Chatsworth Anti-Drug Forum chairperson, Sam Pillay, said the recent arrests would change the perception that drug dealers were "untouchable". He said, “I am excited that the supply to Chatsworth will be cut down drastically due to these arrests.”

"We need them to keep up the good work and this initiative should be sustained. The dealers themselves should be targeted and we hope the problem will be solved. The number of drug dealers increased when business was booming - now the tide is turning," said Pillay.
He said progress made in recent months by the organised crime unit and Metro police was exciting. "The guys have really done an excellent job,” said Pillay.
