Lucky escape for passengers A one-year old child and 13 others narrowly escaped death, after the taxi that they had been travelling in collided into a tree, along the Ladysmith By-pass on December 5.
According to the local police the taxi was travelling along the road, when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road and crashed into a tree.
A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened by police. "Our main aim was to transport the child to the hospital as quick as possible," said Natasha Mahabeer, after the child was carried to an awaiting ambulance. The child is said to have been transported to the Grey's Hospital due to the severity of her injuries. "It seemed at the time of the crash the child had taken most of the impact, when the taxi crashed with the tree." Witnesses added that they were horrified, because the child was lodged between the tree and the taxi.
"It is incredibly challenging to treat a child, of that age," added emergency personnel.
At the time of going to press, the child was reported to be recovering well and had been discharged from the hospital.
