Confusion reigned as law officers clashed Confusion ruled, after a collision occurred along the N3.
Emergency personnel had to take charge of a scene, including having one of their emergency vehicles impounded by RTI Midway Estcourt.
According to witnesses on the scene, the emergency officials had to stand-off, due to the SAPS collision team not responding to the scene of the collision.
"They just said that it was not their area and would not be responding," said one of the emergency personnel.
Further reports indicated that police seemed confused of who had to respond to the scene. "It is our understanding that confusion occurred when it was discovered that the collision had occurred along the border of not only two police stations but also two different clusters," said Captain Charmaine Struwig.
It is alleged that Winterton SAPS arrived on scene first and left before handing over the scene to Colenso SAPS. Cluster Head, Supt Reynders from Estcourt SAPS is dealing with these allegations.
"Colenso SAPS have confirmed that they were unfortunately first given inaccurate and incomplete details as to where the collision had occurred and upon arriving at the bridge found no scene of collision," added the police.
But the situation intensified after an emergency personnel's vehicle, was impounded, due to the fact that the license disc was not displayed on her vehicle. "I tried to explain myself to the Escourt RTI officer, but she would not listen, she continued that my vehicle would be impounded," added the emergency personnel official.
The emergency personnel were then forced to leave the scene of a collision to have her license checked at Midway, Escourt. "I had to travel all the way to Escourt to have my license disc checked, which I did have with me at the time."
The emergency official also added that she could not believe the manner the officer and fellow officers had ganged up against her. "I could not understand what went wrong, I had an explanation, but no-one cared to listen."
She further reported that at some stage the officers started swearing, when she asked why they had to bring her all the way, when a simple radio check would have done the trick.
It was also reported that during the time of the collision, RTI officers were more interested in taking pictures of the gruesome wreck, rather than performing their duties, which was traffic control.
A fax was sent to Ms Thafeni, who is in charge of the RTI Escourt Midway, but during a call, she added that she could not comment on the matter and that the Ladysmith Herald should send the request to her communications officer.
The Ladysmith Herald had requested the details of the communications officer from her, and at the time of going to press is still awaiting the details.Confusion ruled, after a collision occurred along the N3.
