From the desk of Shooz This week, Capt Shooz, Newcastle SAPS Communications officer, has decided to help fight acts of crime against senior citizens and shares some vital information that can assist community members to safeguard themselves from the criminal element.
"Prevention and awareness is a senior citizen's most important weapon in the fight against crime. Criminals are cowards that prey on the weaker and more defenceless members of our community, but by knowing how to take precautions and by being on your guard, you can put security first and enjoy a safer, more protected life," explains Captain Shooz.
Capt Shooz has given a few safety tips for senior citizens to use around their homes and in public:
* Never leave your doors open or unlocked.
* Fit your front and back doors with security gates for added protection.
* Never open your door to strangers. A peep-hole or security chain will allow you to identify strangers before allowing them access to your home.
* Fit windows that can open with burglar bars.
* A bright outside light is a good deterrent for potential burglars and will light your way home when it is dark.
* Make sure that the number of your home is well signposted. This will help the police in an event of an emergency.
* Keep your doors locked and windows closed while driving.
* Never pick up hitchhikers.
* Beware of strangers who approach you at traffic lights.
* If you are being threatened, while in your motor vehicle, blow the hooter continually.
* Criminals know when pension funds are due, so rather arrange for your pension to be paid into your bank account.
* When leaving your home, never carry more money that you need and never keep your purse or wallet in the back pocket of your trousers.
