Police warn against unwarranted calls Police have warned the community against calling them for trivial reasons after being called out on various occasions to incidents that do not warrant their presence.
One such example, as explained by Media Liaison Officer of the Phoenix SAPS Captain M. J. Nzimande, is when residents call SAPS officials complaining about dogs barking loudly or ask for the contact numbers of businesses and NGOs instead of calling the telephone directory.
“Police must be called out to scenes in cases of emergencies and criminal matters. For other queries, residents must go through the relevant channels. For contact numbers, they ought to call the telephone directory and for complaints on the loud barking of their neighbours' dogs, they should call the SPCA,” said Capt. Nzimande.
He urged people to know the difference between civil and criminal matters. He also warned people to refrain from reporting fake cases, saying that in recent times, people had reported incidents which had not actually occurred, hijacking being one of them.
Capt. Nzimande said that the opening of fake cases was a serious offence and offenders should be prepared to face the law as they could be charged with defeating the ends of justice.
He also said that the investigation of each case took time and effort to solve and that the registering of false cases resulted in a waste of police resources, time and effort which could have been spent investigating other legitimate cases.
